Maurice Fogel (1911-1981)                                                    British magician and mentalist   - The Amazing Fogel                    Born 7 July 1911  in London’s East End of Jewish Polish parents the eldest of seven children.                                                          Died 30 October 1981 of a heart attack on 30th October 1981. He was waiting for a train at Golders Green Underground Station, a few minutes’ walk from his home.                                            He described himself as "the world's greatest mind-reader".            In 1947 he was at the Grand Theatre at Bolton and his act (which run for 23 minutes) was probably the first real one-man mental act to run in Variety in the UK.

Wallace Ford (1898-1966)                                                    Actor                                                                                   Born 12 February 1898 Bolton                                            Died 11 June 1966 Woodland Hills, California, USA                   Character actor. Appeared in over 120 films - mostly Westerns.  Real name - Samuel Jones Grundy - 'borrowed' stage name Wallace Ford from a hobo friend who was killed in a railway accident.                                                                              Brought up in a London orphanage and was moved to Canadian branch while still a child. Aged 11 ran away and joined a vaudeville troupe 'Winnipeg Kiddies'.

 

George Formby (1904-1961)                                               English comic, singer and actor                                           Born George Hoy Booth  26 May 1904  in Wigan, Lancashire,  the son of George Formby Sr, from whom he later took his stage name.                                                                                  Died 6 March 1961 Preston                                                    In the 1932 winter season Formby appeared in his first pantomime, Babes in the Wood, in Bolton.

Francis Augustus (Frank) Foster (1892-1970)                          Circus Artist and Ringmaster.                                                  Born 15 December 1892 Astley Bridge, Bolton                        Died 1970 Lincolnshire                                                        Educated Holy Infants School, Astley Bridge, Bolton.                    First Ringmaster of Bertram W Mills Circus - also acrobat, juggler, trapeze artist and bare-back rider. Co-authored books about life in the circus including 'Clowning Through' and 'Pink Coat, Spangles and Sawdust'.

He is also their most successful manager, winning the FA Cup three times during his time there.

Sheila Fox (1938-1944)                                                          Missing schoolgirl.                                                                 1938 Farnworth, Lancashire, England                                       Disappeared 18 August 1944 aged 6.                                    Her disappearance at the age of six from Bolton, Lancashire, England has been called one of World War II England's most "baffling" mysteries. The press dubbed Fox "The Girl in the Green Mac" Sheila She was last seen after leaving St James's Primary School in New Bury, Farnworth, Bolton. At some point as she made her way home to her family's house on Macdonald Avenue, New Bury, Sheila Fox disappeared, never to be seen again.

President of the Bolton Field Naturalists' Society and a noted antiquarian and author.               Colonel commanding the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (afterwards the 5th Battalion L.N.L. Regiment), 1902-9. Holder of the Volunteer Decoration.

Tyson Fury (1988-)                                                                 British professional boxer.                                                   Born 12 August 1988 Wythenshawe, Manchester, England.        He is a two-time world heavyweight champion, having held the WBC, The Ring magazine and lineal titles since defeating Deontay Wilder in February 2020; previously he held the unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and lineal titles after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.                                                   He was based at the new gym in the Platinum Community Centre in the old Robin Hood pub on Halliwell Road.
