James Eden (c.1799 -1874)

Born c.1799 Blackburn

Died 23 April 1874 Showley Hall, Clayton-le-Dale

Senior partner in the bleaching firm Eden and Thwaites.

He had a large mansion called 'Fairlawn', on Lytham seafront.

He was an art connoisseur and friend and patron of artist, Richard Ansdell.

Maurice Edwards                                                                                        British Inventor, Motor engineer.                                                                       Born Bolton, Bolton borough, Greater Manchester, England, United Kingdom.        1910 - patentee with William Edwards of two-cylinder aero engine; engines used by Lilian Bland and James Alcock.                                                                  1916 - founded Edbro (Edwards Brothers) in Bolton.                                           1920s - developed the MEB a three-wheeled car

PC John Egerton (c.1962-1982)                                                                     PC Egerton, 20, was stabbed to death in a factory yard in Farnworth on March 11, 1982, as he tried to arrest a man, he caught siphoning petrol from a van.

Prof Christine El Mahdy (1960-)                                                                     Egyptologist, Coptic and Early Christian scholar and writer.                                 Born 31 May 1950 Belper, Derbyshire.                                                        Educated Markland Hill Primary & Junior School; Canon Slade Grammar School, Bolton.                                                                                                  Born Christine Bamford. Founder and head of British Centre for Egyptian Studies. Family moved to Bolton when she was 7.                                                         Has published several books on Egyptology including 'Tutankhamen: The Life and Death of the Boy-King' and 'Exploring the World of the Pharaohs' (as Christine Hobson.)

 

Polly Emery (1875-1958)                                                                              Actress.                                                                                                      Born 10 May 1875 Bolton                                                                           Died 31 October 1958 Harrow, Middlesex.                                                    Early film actress whose career spanned appearances in silent films from 1916 up to a pioneering TV drama in 1938.

KC 1931. Knighted 1937.                                                                                      MP for South-West Hull 1918-24. Director of Decca Record Company Ltd.

Sgt Arthur Walter Evans (1881-1936)                                                            Soldier                                                                                                      Born 8 April 1881 Liverpool                                                                    Died 1 November 1936  Sydney, Australia                                          Awarded Victoria Cross - won September 2, 1918 - captured an enemy machine gun post at Etaing, France.                                                                              Joined Lincolnshire Regiment under the name Walter Simpson and lived at 99 Davenport Street, Bolton.                                                                             At a public welcome in Bolton was presented with a gold watch - a personal gift from Lord Leverhulme, Bolton's Victory Mayor.
